Maths
We aim to help every child develop strong maths skills from the very start. In the early years, children learn to count, use numbers, solve simple problems, and explore shapes and measures through fun, hands-on activities.
As they move into Key Stage 1, our teaching follows the National Curriculum, helping children to:
- Build confidence and fluency with numbers,
- Understand and apply key maths ideas,
- Think logically and explain their reasoning,
- Solve real-life problems by breaking them down into simple steps.
We believe that with the right support, every child can enjoy and succeed in maths. Our approach helps lay the foundations for future learning and everyday life.
Our Approach to Learning Maths
We believe maths is more than numbers—it's a vital life skill. Our aim is to help children develop:
- Positive attitudes towards maths and understand how it connects to real life.
- Confidence and competence in using maths concepts and skills.
- The ability to solve problems, reason clearly, and think logically and accurately.
- Independence and teamwork, using initiative and motivation in their learning.
- The confidence to talk about maths, ask questions, share ideas, and learn from mistakes.
- The ability to use maths across different subjects and everyday situations.
- A deeper understanding of maths through exploration and investigation.
We provide a stimulating and supportive environment that encourages every child to thrive in maths, using a range of teaching styles and resources to suit all learners.
How We Teach Maths – A Broad and Balanced Approach
Maths learning is active, engaging, and carefully planned to meet the needs of all our pupils. Children take part in a wide range of activities that help them develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical ideas. These include:
- Hands-on activities and games using varied resources.
- Challenging problem-solving tasks to stretch thinking.
- Opportunities to work independently, in pairs, in groups, and as a whole class.
- Purposeful practice to apply and reinforce learning.
- A balance of open-ended and more structured tasks.
- Exposure to different methods of calculations.
- Using technology as a tool for exploring and applying maths.
We also encourage children to use maths across the curriculum, helping them see how it connects to everyday life and other subject areas.
Our maths curriculum embeds the teaching for mastery illustrated below.
